Green season has a reputation problem. It is sold as the cheap months, which does it no favours, because what it actually offers is the version of East Africa most people imagine and few people book.
The grass comes back. The dust goes. Skies build all afternoon into something enormous and theatrical, and the light in the hour before a storm is the best light of the year.
What changes
Animals disperse because water is everywhere, so sightings take a little more patience and a good guide earns their reputation. In exchange you share them with almost nobody. Camps that are full in August have space, and the same room costs meaningfully less.
Who it suits
Second-time safari travellers, photographers, and anyone who would rather watch one thing properly than tick off five. First-timers set on the great migration should still travel in the dry months — that is a different trip with a different point.
Pack for rain that arrives hard and leaves quickly, and keep the afternoons loose.
